A respray can mean anything from blending one scratched door to changing your car’s colour from top to bottom — so “how much does a respray cost?” has a very wide answer. This 2026 guide gives you realistic Hamilton ballpark figures and, more importantly, explains what actually drives the price so you walk in informed.
Typical respray prices in Hamilton (2026)
These are indicative ranges we see across the Waikato. Your exact quote depends on the panels involved, the paint type and how much preparation the car needs — always get it assessed in person.
| Respray type | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Single panel (door, guard, bonnet) | $800 – $2,500 |
| Bumper respray / refinish | $500 – $1,500 |
| Multiple panels / half car | $2,500 – $5,000 |
| Full body respray — same colour | $4,000 – $8,000 |
| Full respray — colour change | $6,000 – $12,000+ |
What actually drives the price
Two “full resprays” can be thousands of dollars apart. Here’s why:
- Paint type. Solid colours (white, black, grey) are cheapest. Metallic, pearl and tri-coat finishes use more product and take more skill to blend invisibly, so they cost more.
- Colour change vs same colour. Changing colour means painting the door jambs, boot, bonnet shuts and other hidden areas so it looks factory from every angle — that’s a lot more labour than a same-colour refresh.
- Preparation. Paint is only as good as what’s under it. Stripping old flaking paint, sorting dents, treating any rust and priming correctly is where the hours go — and where cheap jobs cut corners.
- The vehicle. Larger vehicles, utes and vans need more product; European and some complex body shapes take more masking and care.
- Finish quality. A booth-baked, clear-coated finish that lasts in the NZ sun costs more than a quick blow-over — but it’s the difference between a car that still looks sharp in five years and one that fades and peels.
Beware the “cheap respray”
If a quote looks far below everything else, ask what prep is included. The expensive part of a good respray is the preparation you can’t see — sanding, filling, priming and masking. Skip that and the colour might look fine for a month, then lift, peel or show every imperfection underneath. A proper respray in a controlled, dust-free booth is an investment in quality workmanship that holds up.
Respray or something smaller?
Sometimes you don’t need a full respray at all. A single scratched panel can often be refinished and blended for far less — see our guide to scratch and scuff repair costs. And if you’re selling, a targeted tidy-up through pre-sale grooming often adds more at sale than a full respray costs.
How to get an accurate quote
Ranges are useful, but only an assessment gives you a real number. To get the fastest, most accurate quote:
- Take clear photos in good light — a wide shot plus close-ups of the areas you want done.
- Note your make, model, year and paint code (usually on a plate in the driver’s door jamb).
- Tell us whether it’s a repair, a refresh or a colour change.
At Hamilton Panel & Paint we use computerised colour matching for a factory-grade finish, and every quote is free and no-obligation. Bring your car to 15/40 Te Kowhai East Road, Burbush, or send us photos for a free estimate — usually the same business day.
Prices in this article are indicative 2026 ranges for general guidance only and are not a quote. Costs vary by vehicle, colour and the amount of preparation required.
